Yes—a technically comparable construction can be sourced from another manufacturer, but a Belden 28168A alternative must match the project’s electrical, mechanical, environmental and certification requirements. A matching AWG description is only the starting point.

DEV CABLE can evaluate custom TC-ER sourcing and manufacturing options, review specifications and documentation, and discuss conductor or insulation customization. Final suitability depends on the exact offered construction and project acceptance. This guide separates the Belden reference data from the details a supplier must confirm before a replacement order.

What Is Belden 28168A Cable?

Belden 28168A belongs to the industrial power and control tray-cable family. Its reference arrangement is three insulated power conductors plus a separate ground, under an overall jacket. Tray routes and permitted connections to stationary industrial equipment are relevant applications; the installation still needs engineering review.

The following Belden 28168A cable specifications come from the manufacturer’s current product information and technical datasheet.

Reference item Belden 28168A
Designation / voltage TC-ER tray cable / 600V
Power conductors 3 × 1/0 AWG copper; 19 × 12 AWG strands
Ground conductor 1 × 6 AWG copper; 7 × 14 AWG strands
Power-core insulation PVC/Nylon
Overall jacket Black PVC
Temperature 90°C wet and dry
Standard / properties UL 1277 Type TC-ER; sunlight resistant; direct burial
Nominal overall diameter Approximately 31.0 mm (1.22 in)

Belden’s industrial catalog, page 98, explicitly identifies the ground as uninsulated. “Bare copper” describes conductor material and should not, by itself, be read as proof that insulation is absent. The diameter above follows the current model datasheet rather than the older catalog.

What Must Match in a Belden 28168A Alternative?

Use this checklist to compare a candidate against the original specification and the installed equipment:

  1. Power conductor size. Retain the 1/0 AWG requirement unless engineering approves a change. Approximately 53.5 mm² for 1/0 AWG and 13.3 mm² for 6 AWG are informative conversions; metric area alone does not establish equivalence.
  2. Ground configuration. Specify one separate 6 AWG ground, its insulation status and termination. An undersized or differently configured ground requires review; it cannot become an extra power core.
  3. Copper and stranding. Compare material, strand construction, resistance requirements and terminal acceptance. Different stranding can affect bending and lug compatibility even at the same nominal size.
  4. Rated voltage. Require the documented cable rating for the duty. Similar jacket appearance or insulation thickness is insufficient evidence.
  5. Insulation system. Record PVC/Nylon or any proposed deviation. Check dimensions, stripping and accessories as well as material names.
  6. Temperature. Confirm wet and dry ratings separately. A dry-only statement does not meet a wet-service requirement; ambient and installation conditions also matter.
  7. Jacket and exposure. Verify sunlight, burial, moisture, oil and any named chemicals individually. Belden’s properties do not transfer to another cable.
  8. Dimensions and routing. Check diameter tolerance, bend limits, tray space, pulling constraints and gland fit. Matching nominal diameter does not establish identical installation limits.
  9. Certification and marking. Confirm the exact construction’s approval coverage and supplied markings against the purchase specification.

Also check load, voltage drop, protection and installation with the responsible engineer. This model comparison supplies no universal ampacity or bending-radius value. For exposed-run and machinery-wiring distinctions, see the MTW vs TC-ER cable guide.

Resolve deviations in writing before approval. A commercial quotation should identify the offered construction and the documents still outstanding, so purchasing does not mistake a technical proposal for completed qualification.

PVC/Nylon vs XLPE — Can the Insulation Be Different?

The existing DEV CABLE TC-ER product page describes XLPE insulation with a PVC jacket. Belden’s reference uses PVC insulation with a nylon covering. These are different insulation systems.

PVC is thermoplastic; XLPE has a cross-linked polyethylene structure. A nylon covering adds another material layer. Compound formulation, wall dimensions and processing affect behavior, so polymer names alone cannot establish electrical performance, temperature ratings or resistance to the installation environment.

An XLPE option may be acceptable when the complete cable satisfies the duty, accessories and mandatory certification, and the project permits the material change. Where the approved specification requires PVC/Nylon, obtain acceptance of the deviation before procurement. Confirm wet-service temperature, dielectric requirements, jacket exposure, flame requirements and termination compatibility from offered-model evidence. A higher claimed temperature rating would not resolve a missing approval or unsuitable gland fit.

Use the PVC vs PE vs XLPE insulation comparison for material background, then evaluate the finished cable. Neither insulation choice automatically inherits the other product’s ratings.

How to Verify UL 1277 Compliance

Separate four statements when reviewing a UL 1277 TC-ER cable alternative:

  • Construction claim: the manufacturer says the cable follows UL 1277 construction requirements.
  • Testing: a report records results for identified specimens and requirements within its stated scope.
  • Certification/listing: a valid certification covers an identified manufacturer and product construction or family.
  • Delivered identification: cable markings and the reel or package certification label correspond to the approved supply.

A construction statement or individual test report does not establish UL Listing. The existing DEV CABLE product page’s construction-specification wording is therefore insufficient to claim that every TC-ER option is UL Listed.

Request manufacturer details, applicable UL file/reference information, the exact covered family or construction, a dated datasheet, complete cable-marking details, reel/package label information and relevant supporting test documents. Reconcile these with the quoted size and arrangement. Request clarification if the certificate names another manufacturer or covers a different variant.

Use UL Product iQ to check certification records. UL’s Wire and Cable Application Guide explains certification identification and markings. Installation acceptance remains a separate review under the destination’s adopted rules and project requirements.

Can You Order Small Quantities?

A maintenance replacement may require only a short length, while a production run may have a much larger MOQ. Small-order feasibility depends on the required construction and available inventory. Ask whether an approved cable can be cut to length, whether a trial order is practical, and whether manufacturing a new construction changes the minimum order.

For example, an illustrative RFQ could request one continuous 30-meter replacement length, with the original datasheet, installation details and mandatory certification attached. Specify whether additional termination allowance is included. Thirty meters describes the buyer’s requirement; it is not a guaranteed DEV CABLE MOQ or stock statement.

Confirm cut-length tolerance, packing, international freight, destination requirements and lead time in the quotation. Freight and handling can materially affect a small order’s total cost. A similar cable available sooner remains unsuitable if it fails the mandatory technical or approval requirements.

How to Request a Technical Quotation

Send a complete RFQ containing:

  • Original Belden 28168A part number and technical datasheet, if available.
  • Required total length, individual cuts and whether each length must be continuous.
  • Three-power-plus-ground arrangement, original AWG sizes, stranding and ground insulation status.
  • Installation environment, routing, wet/dry duty, exposures and equipment-entry constraints.
  • Mandatory certification, marking and project documentation requirements.
  • Delivery country, postal code and required delivery date.

Review DEV CABLE TC-ER tray cable solutions, then use this page’s email or WhatsApp quotation buttons to send the package. DEV CABLE can support technical review, customization evaluation, documentation review and export quotation preparation.

DEV CABLE provides a quotation within 24 hours after receipt of a complete RFQ. Production and delivery timing require separate confirmation. Every finished cable length receives 100% continuity testing before shipment; this does not establish certification or replace other agreed testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What cable can replace Belden 28168A?

A candidate must satisfy the project's conductor, ground, voltage, temperature, installation and certification requirements. Compare its exact datasheet and approval documents against 28168A, record differences and obtain project acceptance before ordering. Similar construction alone does not establish an approved replacement.

Does a replacement need UL 1277 certification?

Where the project requires UL Listed TC-ER cable, the offered construction must have the applicable certification coverage. A UL 1277 construction statement or a test report alone does not establish UL Listing. Confirm destination rules and the project's mandatory approval requirements.

Is 3 × 1/0 AWG + 6 AWG ground the same as four-core cable?

It specifies three insulated power conductors and a separate, smaller grounding conductor. Belden's catalog identifies an uninsulated ground for 28168A. A generic four-core description may imply four insulated conductors of equal size; require the supplier to state each conductor's size, insulation and function.

Can XLPE-insulated TC-ER replace PVC/Nylon cable?

Possibly, after review of the complete cable, documented ratings, terminations and certification coverage. Obtain approval for the material deviation where PVC/Nylon is specified. XLPE insulation alone does not establish equivalent temperature, environmental or installation suitability.

Is every TC-ER cable suitable for direct burial?

No. Confirm direct-burial suitability for the exact offered construction through its marking and supporting documentation, together with installation requirements. The exposed-run designation does not establish direct-burial or sunlight resistance.

Can DEV CABLE quote a small replacement quantity?

Yes, a small-quantity RFQ can be reviewed. State the total length and individual cuts. Supply feasibility, production MOQ, cut-to-length options, shipping and lead time depend on the approved construction and available inventory, and require confirmation in the quotation.
